You might recall from last year’s Annual Meeting that we currently have a patch of approximately 1.3 acres of milfoil in the west half of the lake. As you can see from the map, the milfoil is in a very bad spot for boat traffic. We do not yet know the current density of the milfoil in the 1.3 acres but will have a survey done early May for a determination.
At present we have approximately $12K grant dollars remaining that will disappear on 31 December 2025 if not used. We also have approximately $15,000 in savings and checking for use to combat the milfoil.
The Invasive Species Committee (the Board) feel it is imperative to get the 1.3 acres out of the lake before we get into full boating season. We reason if nothing is done, the boats will chop up the milfoil and spread it all over the lake as it was in 2023. We also need to use the Grant money up before it disappears at the end of this year.
We had great success in 2023 using the Procella-Cor. For that reason we applied for a permit to chemically treat with Procella-Cor again this spring. No such luck. WDNR has banned all chemical treatment of lakes this year. We were told they did not want to have the milfoil become resistant to the Procella-Cor like it did with the Two 4D.
Turns out the real reason for the freeze is DNR suspects some or all of the herbicides being used to control milfoil are affecting the wild rice crops… but that’s another story.
With no chance to chemically treat, we are forced to use DASH again to target and remove the 1.3 acres of milfoil. With one centralized area to work, we are hopeful DASH will be very effective this time.
To use the remaining Grant money for DASH treatment we had to amend the DNR Project Agreement to add DASH. Only chemical treatment was included in the original agreement. This was officially accomplished on 11 April 2025. The approval from the WDNR was received on May 13th.
Aquatic Plant Management will remove the milfoil starting May 19th extending throughout the week as needed.
